Autodesk University 2016

November 14-17 I will be attending my third straight Autodesk University conference. The last two followed a marathon flight from the opposite side of the globe. It's great to be back!

On 8 a.m. Tuesday at one of the first sessions, it is my pleasure to introduce my colleague from the Middle-East, Kelvin Tam, whose presentation "Strategizing Mega-Projects" discusses modeling alternatives for large and complex projects.

Kelvin is a passionate architect and scientist with many accolades to his credit. He has worked for RTKL and Rosetti in Los Angeles, and NBBJ in Ohio where he was named 2014 'Mentor of the Year'.

AI in AEC

I've made a commitment to facilitating dialog about AI in AECO and to rebuilding the culture of sharing among our local BIM community. There is already so much information and so many choices in the BIM+AI arena that agreement on the “best” solution is impossible. Fortunately, my search quickly guided me to Stjepan Mikulik, a former BIM leader at Bjark Ingels Group (BIG). Stjepan has taken the challenge of making sense of this phenomenon. He has created a free database of AI products for AEC. BIM Planning and LoD

For members not familiar with BIM planning, it is the process of developing and documenting the various responsibilities of the stakeholders involved in a BIM project. As defined in the Penn State guide, the stages of BIM planning are: Identify BIM Goals and Uses Design the BIM Project Execution Process Develop Information Exchanges Define the Supporting Infrastructure for BIM Implementation Level of Detail vs. Level of Development The LoD concept was developed by VICO Software for construction cost estimation. Faced with the problem of determining how accurate, or how definitive, were the model elements to which they wished to assign costs, they developed the concept they called "Level of Detail". LOD 100 meant not very definitive (an area or volume rate is accurate enough) LOD 200 assume the number of items in the model is correct, but use an estimate for each, LOD 300 items are identified and actual cost can be used, LOD 400 is a m...
